Puppy Play School

Puppies PlayStarting Off on the Right Paw

Dogs who are well socialized from birth with both dogs and people are much less likely to be aggressive, to suffer from fear-biting, or to interact undesirably with either species. They are more likely to be calm and interested in even the most unusual situations.

In an ideal world, all puppies would remain with their litter for a minimum of 10 weeks.   This is when many vital life lessons should be learned, such as: how to get along with other dogs; appropriate use of their mouths; how to tolerate the presence of other dogs near their food and toys; and how to tolerate frustration.

The sad truth is, it's not economical for commercial breeders to keep the pups that long. They want to move them out as quickly as possible in order to make a profit.  Few pups today enjoy the security of their birth family for more than 6 weeks. Pet store puppies frequently leave their litter at only 4 weeks.  This can lead to insecure, poorly socialized puppies, who soon grow into frightened, skittish, sometimes aggressive dogs with poor social skills, who tend to overreact whenever they feel threatened.

Our Puppy Play School is designed to nurture the developing puppy spirit while providing the all important socialization training.  While we can't replace the formative litter experience, it is possible to teach many of the same lessons with supervised exposure to other dogs of similar age. The window of opportunity for socialization training begins to close between 8 and 10 months.  After that, it's a matter of rehabiltating a dog by "untraining" established, undesirable behaviors.  This is usually a much more difficult and lengthy process.

Puppy Playgroups are limited to a maximum of 4 dogs under the age of 6 months who have had all of their intial vaccinations.  For your convenience, leash training, house training, crate training, and basic obedience can be taught in conjunction with Puppy Play School.  Please contact Dee about our puppy packages.
